In either case, the plastic surgeons must successfully complete a residency that integrates hands-on experience with theory. During the residency, the medical school will provide supervision as well as education and participate in seminars and conferences to ensure that the plastic surgeons have the skills to conduct the kind of advanced reconstructive work that they will do in their practice. The first step is the ACPS accredited residency in reconstructive surgery, which takes about one year. Plastic surgeons who successfully completed this six-month residency can go on to take the next step, a fellowship in plastic or cosmetic surgery, which takes two years.
There are three domains of procedures: corrective procedures, cosmetic treatments and surgical procedures. Reconstructive procedures include such things as breast reconstruction, tummy tucks and facelifts. Cosmetic procedures include procedures such as liposuction, breast augmentation and a rhinoplasty. Surgical procedures include procedures such as a breast lift, chin reduction and removal of a nose scar. Plastic surgeons who specialize in a particular technique may also choose to enroll in a certification program, although these programs do not require passing exams.
