Building Community Strength Through Mobile Command Centers

The Ground Mobility Command Center, or GMC, was, if you will, a military program to design and deploy mobile, secure and highly fortified, command post locations for use by the president of the United States to control the operations of U.S. military forces in the event of a disastrous attack against the U.S. Here is the original site.

In 2021. Congress voted overwhelmingly to reimburse the Department of Defense (DOD) for the millions of dollars expended annually to operate the Ground Mobility Command Centers. Although the Defense Department has already announced that they would begin working with state and local law enforcement agencies to increase public safety. Currently, the only people permitted to be in charge of these mobile command centers are six senior level officials: the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Safety; the Director of the Office of Compliance and Certification; the Chief of Staff; the Assistant Military Chief for Public Safety; and the Superintendent of cadets and personnel. This was criticized by many public safety agencies because they claimed that there is not enough time in the day to safely prepare these mobile bases for an attack. This criticism is unfounded, however.

Another group that could benefit from such a system are law enforcement agencies. Law enforcement officials have the best possible scenario when it comes to protecting the American public from terrorism, but are also facing difficult times trying to secure areas where there are known or suspected terrorist cells operating. By coordinating with the local community, law enforcement officials can partner with community outreach groups such as churches, synagogues and other religious organizations to make use of the mobile command centers. By collaborating with these local partners, community outreach groups can provide better security for the public while also increasing community cohesion and helping strengthen ties between the different neighborhood groups.
