A dentist, also referred to as a dental hygienist, is a specialized medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of dental diseases and abnormalities of the oral cavity mainly of dogs. The dentist’s supportive team helps in providing immediate oral health care. Oral health care includes prevention of tooth decay, tartar build-up, formation of abscesses, periodontal diseases, jaw disorders, facial trauma, facial pain, headaches, toothaches, improper dental plaque removal, jaw disorders, and other gum diseases. It also involves the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for patients with complicated oral health problems. A dentist plays an important role in providing emotional support to patients and their families. Check out Dentist for more info.

The American Dental Association (ADA) defines a dentist as: “an oral medical specialist trained to diagnose, treat, and prevent oral disease through examination and systematic treatment of the entire oral health”. To become a dentist, you need at least a bachelor’s degree, four years of relevant training, and a dentist exam that are approved by the state. The year summer program prepares students to enter the profession as dental professionals. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on experience while earning their degree in dental hygiene.

Dentists are required to have a strong understanding of human anatomy, physiological processes, proper oral health care, diagnosing disease, and performing therapeutic procedures. In addition to basic medical and dental science knowledge, they must have interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with patients and take responsibility for their oral health. Dentists also specialize in specific areas such as pediatrics, endodontics, periodontics, gastroenterology, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology, and orthopedics. They perform primary and specialty procedures and manage office practices.
